Breakfast really will be the most important meal of the day on NorthLink’s ferries this week, the company having pledged to donate all breakfast takings from Friday’s (March 19) sailings to Cancer Research UK (Scotland).

The restaurants on-board all three of NorthLink’s passenger vessels - Hamnavoe, Hrossey and Hjaltland – will offer special breakfast meal options, featuring locally sourced ingredients, with all proceeds going to the UK’s leading cancer charity. Breakfasts will be made available throughout the course of the day, as part of the charity’s nationwide All Day Breakfast event.

Cancer research is an issue close to the hearts of NorthLink staff and crew, particularly so since Ingrid Rosie, a young member of Hamnavoe’s crew, died from the disease late last year.

Bill Davidson, chief executive of NorthLink Ferries, said: “We make regular contributions to a number of local groups and charities, but since the tragic death of Ingrid last year, there has been a growing desire amongst our staff to raise money specifically for the prevention and treatment of cancer.

“The ‘charity breakfast’ idea was suggested and various breakfast meals, including scrambled eggs, smoked salmon, and a specially enhanced porridge dish will be available on our passenger ferries throughout Friday. In addition, Cancer Research will have a stall on-board Hamnavoe, from which they will be conducting other fundraising activities, including a raffle.

“I’d like to thank Aberdeen-based George Craig & Son Catering Division for their support in this fundraising initiative and, of course, all our staff and crew who have made it possible. I hope we can raise a significant amount of money for Cancer Research on Friday.”
