The Coastguard Rescue Helicopter and a Bond HelicopterThe annual RNLI and NorthLink charity cruise raised a record breaking £10,000 for Lerwick Ladies Lifeboat Guild recently.

The event, staged on Saturday June 14 formed part of the RNLI Lerwick Open Day. The NorthLink ferry, MV Hjaltland, carrying 515 passengers, navigated The Coastguard Rescue Helicopter and the Lerwick Lifeboatthe traditional route from Holmsgarth Terminal, to the isles of Bressay and Noss before returning to harbour in Lerwick.

In addition to the cruise the RNLI carried out demonstrations involving a helicopter and rescue vessels.

Jane Leask, service manager at NorthLink, said: “The day ran smoothly and everyone had an excellent time.

“Once we reached Bressay, we launched our Fast Rescue Boat into the water and were joined by the Coastguard Rescue Helicopter, Bond Helicopters and the Lerwick Lifeboat. They all worked together to give us a fantastic display in the air and sea. Part of the display involved rescue workers landing on the The Coastguard Rescue Helicopter and the Lerwick LifeboatHjaltland before returning to their helicopters. People stood in their hundreds and cheered as they landed on deck.

“The total amount raised both from our cruise, and the entertainment on the pier during the day, was £10,427.48, the biggest amount ever. We would like to thank the crew of the Coastguard Helicopter and Bond Helicopters along with Lerwick Lifeboat crew for the fantastic display and Nynas who supplied the fuel for the event.”
