Complimentary Internet access
NorthLink Ferries are pleased to offer complimentary Internet access in designated public areas and in Premium, Executive and some Inner 4 berth cabins onboard MV Hjaltland and MV Hrossey.
To use the wi-fi service all you need is a wireless enabled laptop or handheld device with the Wi-Fi switch in the ‘on’ position. To use the cabin internet service all you need is a laptop with an ethernet port and an ethernet cable. Ethernet cables are available to buy in the Northern Isles shop.
HOW TO CONNECT TO THE NORTHLINK PUBLIC AREA WiFi
Connecting to the NorthLink Wi-Fi service is as easy as going on-line from your local coffee shop or other public location.
- Turn on your wireless-enabled laptop or handheld device. Some computers may connect automatically.
- Double-click the WiFi icon at the bottom right-hand side of your screen, or open your start menu, find "network" or "internet connections" (possibly found within your Control Panel) and click on the option for wireless.
- Your computer will search for wireless connections and will offer a list of options. Select the connection marked 'NORTHLINK' in capital letters.
- Once you click, you will be connected - no password is required. Launch your preferred web browser.
HOW TO CONNECT WHEN IN A DESIGNATED CABIN WITH A “PLUG-IN”
Connecting to the Internet from the Premium, Executive and some Inner 4 berth cabins with an ethernet cable is easy:
- Turn on your laptop.
- Plug one end of your ethernet (Cat5) cable into the socket on the cabin wall, and the other into the Ethernet port on your Laptop.
- After a moment, you will see a ‘connected’ balloon in the bottom corner of your laptop screen.
- Launch your preferred web browser.
Please note - if you find that you cannot get connected, please ensure that your web browser proxy settings are set to ‘ off’.

1. By accessing the service – by either WiFi or plug-in - you are agreeing to obey the Terms and Conditions listed below, the “Terms”. If you do not agree to the Terms, please do not access the service. We reserve the right to amend these terms and conditions at any time.
2. As this service will provide access at sea the response times will be much slower when compared to a land based broadband service. The link will be via a satellite and hence inherently slower as signals are bounced to and from the satellite. As the overall bandwidth is limited and you will be sharing with others, response times will clearly vary with demand. Please be patient.
3. We would like to ensure that all of our customers have an enjoyable internet experience whilst travelling on NorthLink's vessels. We have therefore implemented a ‘fair use' policy to ensure that we can continue to provide this service:
4. Websites being accessed will be monitored and blocks will be placed on ‘inappropriate' websites.
5. Any streaming web-sites will be blocked to maximize the available bandwidth. Examples of streaming websites are BBC iplayer or Spotify.
6. You may not use the service for any illegal purpose including but not limited to breaching any intellectual property or computer misuse legislation and downloading or uploading any illegal material; send any unsolicited commercial email (or “spam”) or any activity relating to it; carry out any “hacking” activities such as attempting to access systems without authorization or carry out denial of service attacks.
7. The service is provided on an “as-available” basis. However, we may suspend access at any time and for any reason.
8. You acknowledge that use of the service is entirely at your own risk.
9. Your email address may be used for marketing purposes by NorthLink Ferries Ltd.
BY CLICKING ON THE LINK TO ACCESS FREE INTERNET SERVICES OR PROCEEDING TO USE THIS FIXED IN CABIN OR PUBLIC AREA WIFI TO ACCESS THE INTERNET YOU WILL BE DEEMED TO HAVE READ, UNDERSTOOD, ACCEPTED AND AGREED TO BEING BOUND BY THE FOREGOING TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF USE.
