What's happening in Orkney in June 2011
June is a busy month in Orkney with many events taking place during the beautiful weather of midsummer.
The most famous of these events is the St Magnus Festival, which is now now in its 35th year. Taking place between the dates of 17th June 2011 - 22nd June 2011, this festival of the Arts brings world-class performances (orchestras, recitalists, theatre, dance and literature) to the Northern Isles as well as showcasing superb community productions.
The 2011 Festival will feature the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, Thierry Fischer, Alessandro Taverna, Florilegium, Fretwork, Allan Neave and a community production of The Tempest with film, theatre, music and circus.
This year, the prestigious St Magnus Festival will also host two special events in conjunction with NorthLink Ferries. Performances from Chas Mackenzie and Ruaridh Campbell will be free to those travelling on the Hjaltland on Thurdsday, 16th June and performances from Pure Brass will be free to those travelling on the Hamnavoe on Friday, 17th June. View our St Magnus Festival Page for more information.
Not an event, but certainly a recommendation for June, is a walk around the Ring of Brodgar at Summer Solstice, towards midnight, on the longest day, Tuesday, 21st June.
This ring of neolithic stones are located in between two swan-filled lochs, with heather and bird calls all around. No clue has been left to the purpose behind the stones. However, with the sun barely setting even at midnight, you, and a quiet handful of other visitors, will be enchanted at this most mysterious of places.
This June also sees the Hoy Half-Marathon celebrating its 25th year.
This is a friendly event on the beautiful, rugged and hilly island of Hoy - home of the Old Man, the Dwarfie Stane and the stunning valley of Rackwick. The Hoy Half Marathon has dramatic scenery, is a challenging but rewarding run and takes place on 12th June, 2011. There are various age categories, including veterans, and children’s events for those aged 5-17. Transport is provided from Orkney Mainland - to register for the event, please email hoyhalf@gmail.com
