Taking a boat trip to the Island of Mousa to see the best preserved Iron Age Broch in the world

What's happening in Shetland in June 2011

Shetland lies 60 degrees North Summer sunset in Aith Voe, ShetlandShetland has an event filled month in June, and experiences some of its best weather over midsummer. As Shetland is so far north (and shares the same latitude as Anchorage in Alaska, St Petersburg or southern Greenland) during summertime the days are long, and even at midnight, the sun barely sets. This unusual light is known as the Simmer Dim.

Taking advantage of this is the Simmer Dim Rally - an annual bikers rally which takes place between Thursday 16th June 2011 - Sunday 19th June 2011. The rally started in 1982 and takes place in Vidlin - this is the 29th Rally - of Bikers arrive in Shetland for the Simmer Dim Rallywhich NorthLink Ferries are proud sponsors. Attendance is by pre-booked invite only - contact Leona@skol.freeserve.co.uk for further information.

This summer will see Lerwick as a host port for the Tall Ships Race, however, if you can't attend in July, the spectular Bergen - Shetland Races will be held between Wednesday 22nd June 2011 - Sunday 26th June 2011. These ocean races take place between Korsfjorden, south of Bergen and Lerwick, the capital of the Shetland Islands.

Spectacular seabird cliffs can be seen up close on a boat tripThe yachts will leave Bergen on 22nd June and make their way to Lerwick. The second leg of the races begins on 26th June, with the yachts leaving Lerwick and crossing the finishing line in Korsfjorden, south of Bergen.

Also, whilst the days are longer and the weather is good - can we point you in the direction of a small boat tour? With wildlife tours around the cliffs of Bressay and Noss leaving from Lerwick, you can discover the rich diversity of seabirds and plantlife and come face to face with seals.

With knowlegable and friendly guides showing you way, the sights and sounds from thronging seabird cliffs of Bressay will add up to an experience you'll never forget! Mousa broch - no one on the uninhabited island has used the stones - making it the best preserved broch in the worldOne such boat charter is Seabirds and Seals - www.seabirds-and-seals.com - though other tours and charters are available. Also during June, the 15 minute boat trip to Mousa to see the most intact Iron Age broch in the world is a must - Mousa boat charters run from April to mid September.
