What's happening in Shetland in November 2011

During November in Shetland, the days may get shorter but the events do not get fewer!

The first event of note is the Shetland Food Festival. Running from Saturday 5th until Sunday 13th November, this is a celebration of Shetland's larder and there's plenty to see and do for all ages. Highlights include cookery demonstrations, a chance to make your own cheese for Christmas, a visit from Neil Forbes, Scottish Chef of the Year, Shetland Food Festival showcases Shetland's delicious larder'Make Your Own Tammie Norrie Snowman' for the children and a producers' Market, fish market and special menus from Restaurants, Cafes and Take-Aways across Shetland. November is also host to a festival of a different flavour. The Thomas Fraser Memorial Festival runs from Thursday 10th November 2011 - Sunday 13th November 2011 and celebrates the musical talents of a local fisherman who died 1978. Thomas Fraser's self-recorded music was found 25 years later and has been compiled across 3 CDs. Thomas's name is now famous worldwide and is compared to other legends such as Hank Williams. November is a lovely time of year to visit Shetland, as the nights get longer there's always something to do. Check out the Shetland Times for events whilst you visit. Long walks home in the evening may also hold the lovely surprise of the Northern Lights for a few fortunate visitors. Burra in ShetlandIf you are looking for recommended places to visit in Shetland during November, why not consider a visit to Trondra and East and West Burra? These are lovely green islands with a gentle rolling landscape. The islands can be reached by bridges, the first of which joins Trondra to the mainland across the bay from Scalloway. Trondra is a sparsely inhabited island which is at no point is more than 1km across. Further bridges lead to the islands of East and West Burra.

Located on West Burra is the vibrant village of Hamnavoe and the lovely south-facing sandy beach at Meal, where the sea is a beautiful truquoise colour. At Papil, there are early Christian remains where the pictish symbol stone, known as the Papil Stone, was found in 1877.Meal beach in West BurraBannaminn beach and land bridge One of the most lovely places on West Burra to visit is Bannaminn Beach, which forms a narrow land bridge at the shore of Banna Minn bay. In the Shetland Islands, where the landscape all around is breathtaking, Bannaminn beach stands out as a highlight!
