Merchant Navy Day has provided an opportunity to remember the sacrifices of the seafarers of the past, to show appreciation for British shipping and to look ahead to our future as a maritime nation.Merchant Navy Day

Seafarers UK campaigns for the Red Ensign Flag (the UK Merchant Navy’s official flag) to be flown on Saturday 3rd September on public buildings and landmark flagstaffs across the UK along with local authorities and governments.

NorthLink Ferries’ ship MV Hamnavoe was proud to display the Red Ensign Flag in honour of Merchant Navy Day on Saturday.

Orkney drugs dog sets sail with NorthLink Ferries

A former Police Scotland dog set sail aboard NorthLink Ferries passenger vessel MV Hamnavoe this morning (Monday 10 September) to get a glimpse of his new life as a drugs detection dog in Orkney. Whisky, a nine-year-old yellow Labrador, and his handler, PC Matthew Watson, along with Sgt Niall Maclean, travelled on the ferry from Scrabster to Stromness for a two-day visit to meet Whisky’s new team.
