The St Magnus Festival 2011
The St Magnus Festival is Orkney's annual celebration of the arts. Founded in 1977 by Orkney's distinguished resident composer Sir Peter Maxwell Davies, the Festival has grown from small beginnings into one of
Britain's most highly regarded and adventurous arts events.
The unique combination of world-class performance, community participation of the highest quality and the magic of Orkney at midsummer attracts audiences from throughout Britain and further afield; many return year after year.
Though musical events are at the heart of the artistic programme, the Festival also encompasses drama, dance, literature and the visual arts.
In 2011, NorthLink Ferries were proud to work with the St Magnus Festival by hosting two special on-board events -
Thursday 16 June
Chas Mackenzie and Ruaridh Campbell
| MV Hjaltland |
| from Aberdeen 17.00 |
Chas MacKenzie from Oban is a true virtuoso performer; his guitar work is fresh, dynamic, acoustic and breathtaking with dexterous, almost lyrical arrangements. He draws from numerous influences: jazz, classical, Americana, Pink Floyd. Ruaridh started playing the violin at the age of 9 in Aberfoyle and was later taught by virtuoso fiddler, Douglas Lawrence. He is a winner of the prestigious Glenfiddich Fiddle Championship and was also a finalist at the BBC Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician of the year. Ruaridh and Chas play together in the Halton Quartet.
They gave impromptu concerts on the evening sailing from Aberdeen to Kirkwall. So, for travellers on this particular route, the St Magnus Festival started a day early.
