NorthLink Ferries operate a nightly service to Lerwick in Shetland from Aberdeen, with frequent stops in Hatston, outside Kirkwall in Orkney.

Aberdeen is a busy, vibrant city with a rich maritime heritage on the North East coast of Scotland. The city is easy to reach, being located just 125 miles from Edinburgh and 145 miles from Glasgow, and well served by all forms of public transport.

Aberdeen Ferry Terminal is located in the heart of the city, a ten minute walk from the bus and train station.

    • Check-in at Aberdeen Ferry Terminal commences 2 hours prior to departure.
    • Passengers bringing their car on board should check in 1 hour prior to departure.
    • Check-in closes 30 minutes prior to departure.

Parking

    • Commercial Quay parking (72hrs max stay) is operated by Aberdeen Harbour Board.
    • Union Square is a 3 minute walk away with parking for standard size vehicles.
    • NCP Ship Row is a 15 minute walk away with a height restriction of 1.9m. A discount is available to NorthLink passengers. NCP tickets must be validated on return in the Aberdeen Ferry Terminal. Visit the NCP website for T&Cs.
    • Parking for longer vehicles is available at Aberdeen Beach Boulevard and Esplanade.

Route info

    • Connecting port: the ferry sails from Aberdeen to Hatston and Lerwick.
    • The Journey: the ferry sails once a day in the early evening. On certain nights of the week, the ferry will sail from Aberdeen directly to Lerwick in Shetland, arriving the following morning. On other nights, the ferry departs a little earlier in the evening and stops in the late evening, at Hatston, outside Kirkwall in Orkney, before sailing on to Lerwick in Shetland, arriving the following morning.

Luggage

    • The left luggage facility is available to passengers who are booked for the same day’s sailing.
    • Luggage can be left from 08:00, the ability to leave luggage ends 2 hrs 15 mins before the ship’s departure and luggage must be collected before check-in closes.
    • It is the responsibility of passengers to transfer their own luggage from the left luggage facility to the luggage trolleys for boarding.
    • Luggage must be labelled for the onward voyage (e.g. Kirkwall or Lerwick).
    • All items of baggage are left at the owners risk and maybe subject to searching if regulations require.

Arriving in the morning

    • Drivers must come down to the car deck (when called) to remove their vehicle from the ship. Foot passengers are welcome to stay onboard until 08:00 and leave by the passenger walkway.
    • Drivers wishing to return to the ship after moving their vehicles, can park in a designated Breakfast Parking area in lane 10. Drivers should then go back into the passenger terminal, through the walkway and show their boarding card to security staff.
    • There is a bus stop just outside the Aberdeen Ferry Terminal for the daily 727 Jet Bus service to Aberdeen Airport. The 727 Jet Bus service also operates from nearby Union Square. For times and more details please visit the Stagecoach website.

Aberdeen Bus, Train, and Airport Connections

  • Bus: Aberdeen Bus Station is located less than one mile from Aberdeen Ferry Terminal. Local bus services are operated by First Bus Aberdeen and Stagecoach. Longer distance bus services are operated by Citylink and Megabus.
  • Train: Aberdeen Railway Station is located less than one mile from Aberdeen Ferry Terminal. There are regular services to/from Inverness, Edinburgh and Glasgow with onward connections. Train services are operated by ScotRail, East Coast and CrossCountry.
  • Airport: Aberdeen Airport is located 7 miles from Aberdeen Ferry Terminal. Several airlines provide regular services to/from major British and European cities.
  • There is a bus stop just outside the Aberdeen Ferry Terminal for the 727 Jet Bus service to Aberdeen Airport.

Bicycle rental services are available nearby. A storage stand for 6 cycles and a bike repair stand with tools is available outside the terminal building. 80 sheltered storage stands are available at Aberdeen Railway Station.
