The NorthLink Ferries service which sails from Aberdeen to Lerwick in Shetland, and from Lerwick to Aberdeen frequently stops at Hatston Ferry Terminal, on the outskirts of Kirkwall in Orkney.

Kirkwall is the historic capital of Orkney. This lively town has thriving businesses, unique shops and great options for food and drink. At Kirkwall’s centre is the beautiful red sandstone St Magnus Cathedral, built in honour of a Viking Earl.

Kirkwall is located centrally on the Orkney Mainland, 16 miles from Stromness.

    • Long Stay (free of charge) parking, operated by Orkney Islands Council, is available 500 metres from the terminal building, close to the Hatston car check-in building.

Route info

    • Connecting port: the ferry sails from Hatston to Aberdeen and Lerwick.
    • The Journey: The late evening call at Hatston will always be part of a ‘through’ sailing between Aberdeen and Lerwick. On certain nights of the week, the ferry sails from Aberdeen, arrives in Hatston and then sails on to Lerwick. On other nights, the ferry sails from Lerwick, arrives in Hatston and then sails on to Aberdeen.
    • Ferries: M.V. Hjaltland and M.V. Hrossey sail this route.

Hatston Bus, Ferry, and Airport Connections

  • Bus: Kirkwall Bus Station is located 2 miles from Hatston Ferry Terminal in Kirkwall’s town centre of Kirkwall. Buses are operated by Stagecoach.
  • There is a bus service from/to Kirkwall and Stromness which connects with evening ferries arriving at Hatston. View the Hatston connecting bus information.
  • Inter-Island Ferries: Orkney Ferries operate a regular passenger ferry service from Kirkwall to the islands of Shapinsay, Stronsay, Sanday, Eday, Westray, Papa Westray and North Ronaldsay. Other inter-island services can be taken from Stromness, Houton in Orphir and Tingwall in Evie.
  • Airport: Kirkwall Airport is located 5½ miles from the Hatston Terminal and 3 miles from the town centre of Kirkwall. There is a regular bus service from Kirkwall to the airport, operated by Stagecoach. Inter-island services are operated by Loganair.
