We are seeking an experienced and confident Second Officer to join the Serco NorthLink Ferries fleet, operating lifeline passenger and freight services between Aberdeen, Orkney and Shetland.

This is a senior watchkeeping position, suited to a capable Officer of the Watch who is ready to take greater operational responsibility and play a key role in cargo oversight, navigational decision-making and onboard safety leadership.

Operating in some of the UK’s most demanding coastal waters, you will be trusted to exercise sound judgement, uphold the highest safety standards and contribute meaningfully to the vessel’s overall performance.

The Role

As the successful candidate, you will report to the Chief Officer and Master and act as the Senior Officer of the Watch.

You will:

  • Take charge of a navigational watch, exercising confident and independent judgement in restricted visibility, heavy weather and high-traffic situations.
  • Support and contribute to cargo planning and vessel stability management, ensuring safe and compliant loading operations.
  • Oversee vehicle and freight operations during designated periods, ensuring security, stability and safe working practices.
  • Hold designated responsibility for safety and/or navigational equipment, ensuring full compliance with the Planned Maintenance System and statutory requirements.
  • Maintain nautical charts, publications and passage planning for all voyages.
  • Support audit readiness and inspection standards onboard.
  • Assist in leading safety drills, inspections and crew supervision.
  • Maintain accurate voyage records, deck logbooks and statutory documentation.
  • Provide leadership and mentorship to junior officers and deck ratings.
  • Deputise for the Chief Officer as required.

What You’ll Bring

Essential

  • Chief Mate (Unlimited) Certificate of Competency
  • Valid Seafarer Medical Certificate (ENG1)
  • GMDSS General Operator’s Certificate
  • All required STCW basic and advanced safety certification
  • ECDIS Generic / NAEST (O)
  • Proficiency in Survival Craft & Rescue Boats
  • Fast Rescue Boat
  • Strong understanding of COLREGS and bridge watchkeeping principles
  • A positive, team-focused approach
  • Proven ability to make sound navigational decisions
  • Strong leadership and communication skills

Desirable

  • Experience on Ro-Ro or passenger ferries
  • Experience operating in UK coastal or Scottish waters
  • Familiarity with ISM compliance and marine safety audits
  • Experience mentoring trainee officers and deck apprentices

Role Overview
A challenging and rewarding opportunity exists for a highly motivated 3rd Officer to join the Serco NorthLink Ferries fleet, operating on the Northern Isles routes.

Context / Job Purpose
The Third Officer is responsible to the Chief Officer and Master at all times. During Bridge Watchkeeping and Loading Officer duties the Third Officer has functional authority over the Deck crew assigned to the watch.

Core Duties and Responsibilities

  • In charge of a Navigational Watch.
  • In charge of car deck operations during loading/discharging during designated periods.
  • Maintenance and upkeep of charts, including electronic charts, and all nautical publications, including in electronic format, if required.
  • Emergency Duties as per Muster List.
  • Partake in weekly Emergency Drills.
  • Ensuring that all L.S.A. & F.F.A. are in good working order and up to date as per the planned maintenance system.
  • Upkeep of records in approved planned maintenance system as per designated areas of responsibility.
  • Any other duties required by the Chief Officer or Master.

Rate of pay: £ 34,256 (PSA, Pro rata), £ 41,216 (Chef, Pro rata)
Shift Pattern:  2 week on / 2 week off

Serco operate three passenger vessels between mainland Scotland and the Orkney & Shetland islands: the MV Hjaltland, MV Hrossey and MV Hamnavoe.

NorthLink Ferries sail daily from Aberdeen to Lerwick and from Scrabster on the north coast of Scotland to Stromness in Orkney. Our ferries operate 363 days per year providing the lifeline service to the Northern Isles, with islanders, visitors, goods and supplies all travelling by NorthLink Ferries.

Ideally living within the local catchment area of our operating ports of Stromness and Scrabster as well as Aberdeen, Kirkwall and Lerwick, you will be friendly, enthusiastic, flexible and a quick learner. About the role

Opportunities to work in a dynamic, busy environment onboard our ferries. Onboard passenger services staff are responsible for providing the highest levels of customer services to our passengers – whether it be our retail, food or beverage outlets.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience

In order to apply you must be able to meet the following requirements:

  • Successful completion of a Seafarers ENG1 Medical
  • Be able to commit and successfully complete a two-week training programme starting 6th April
  • Able to live onboard when rostered on duty.

Training

With the benefit of a comprehensive two-week training programme including STCW training being provided to equip you with the full range of skills you’ll deliver the highest standards around. Our training is focused on providing a service which reflects safety, efficiency and customer satisfaction.

PLEASE NOTE

Context/Job Purpose
The Able Seafarer Engine is responsible to the engineer officer of the watch to assist with the safe and efficient running of the ships machinery. While on board the vessel this person will ensure that all work and emergency duties are carried out in accordance with the guidelines contained in: Company Management Manual, Code of Safe Working Practice, SOLAS and MARPOL Regulations and Shipboard Oil Pollution Emergency Plan.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Keep the engine room spaces free of all dirt and debris
  • Note the amount of rubbish transferred to shoreside in the appropriate place
  • Maintenance and repair of all parts of the ship as required.
  • Maintain the cosmetic appearance of all engine room spaces as directed by the second engineer
  • Assist the engineer officers with their maintenance tasks
  • Ensure correct stowage of tools and materials as appropriate
  • Any other duties as directed by the Chief Engineer or Second Engineer
