NorthLink Ferries operate from Stromness Ferry Terminal, which can be found at Orkney’s main gateway – the busy port of Stromness. Dating from the 17th century, Stromness owes its origins to its excellent harbour.

Today, visitors and residents alike can stroll through the cobbled streets enjoying the range of craft shops, tremendous views of the harbour and the excellent dining opportunities.

Stromness Bus, Ferry, and Airport Connections

Stromness is 16 miles from Kirkwall, 9 miles from Finstown and 19 miles from Kirkwall Airport.

  • Bus
    In Stromness, buses stop opposite the ferry terminal. Buses are operated by Stagecoach.
    There is a bus service from Stromness which connects with evening ferries to/from Hatston.

  • Inter-Island Ferries
    Orkney Ferries operate a regular passenger ferry service from Stromness to Graemsay and Hoy and also operate all other inter-island services.
  • Airport
    Kirkwall Airport is located 19 miles from Stromness. There is a regular bus service from Stromness to Kirkwall, and from Kirkwall to the airport, operated by Stagecoach. Inter-island services are operated by Loganair.

Car parking (hourly/daily rates apply) is available nearby the Stromness Terminal:

Short Stay (Pay and Display):
The Stromness Ferry Terminal car park is operated by Orkney Islands Council and located just outside Stromness Ferry Terminal.
The Ferry Inn car park is operated by Orkney Islands Council and located outside the Ferry Inn opposite the Stromness Ferry Terminal.

Long Stay (Free of Charge):
The Ferry Road car park is operated by Orkney Islands Council and located opposite the harbour, north of Stromness Ferry Terminal.
The Old Academy car park is operated by Orkney Islands Council and located above the old town, off Back Road and opposite Downies Lane.

Checking in at Stromness

Check-in for the 06:30 sailing will open 60 minutes prior to departure. Passengers who have reserved an overnight cabin should check in and board for the 06:30 sailing from Stromness between 21:30 – 23:30 the previous evening. For all other sailings check-in will open 90 minutes prior to departure. Car drivers are recommended to check in at least one hour prior to departure.
