Ferry from Aberdeen to Kirkwall

Route information

In addition to the Scrabster to Stromness crossing, you can sail to Orkney from Aberdeen via MV Hrossey and MV Hjaltland. These are the same ferries which sail to and from Shetland but on certain days of the week they stop at Hatston (outside Kirkwall) in the Orkney Islands. The sailing from Aberdeen to Kirkwall takes place in the evening, and the sailing from Kirkwall to Aberdeen is an overnight journey.

Route guidance

  • The distance by sea from Aberdeen to Hatston (outside Kirkwall in Orkney) is 154 miles.
  • The sailing from Aberdeen to Kirkwall takes place in the evening, leaving at 17:00 and arriving in Hatston at 23:00, before continuing northwards to Shetland again at 23:45. Passengers arriving in Hatston must disembark the vessel upon arrival.
  • The sailing from Kirkwall to Aberdeen is an overnight journey. The ferry sails from Shetland, and arrives at Hatston at 23:00. It then departs Hatston and arrives the following morning in Aberdeen at 07:00. Booking a reclining seat, sleeping pod or cabin is recommended for both journeys.   • The Aberdeen terminal is conveniently located at Jamieson’s Quay, in the heart of the city. It’s directly over the road from Union Square Shopping Centre, a five-minute walk from the bus and train stations as well as a ten-minute walk from Union Street. View transport connections to Aberdeen.
