Ferry from Kirkwall to Lerwick

Route information

MV Hrossey and MV Hjaltland, the ferries which sail from Aberdeen to Shetland, often stop in the late evening at Hatston (outside Kirkwall) in the Orkney Islands. Passengers joining the sailing from Hatston to Lerwick will arrive the following morning. The sailing from Lerwick to Hatston (outside Kirkwall) departs at tea time and arrives late in the evening in Orkney.

Route guidance

  • The distance by sea from Lerwick to Kirkwall is 115 miles.
  • The sailing from Hatston to Lerwick is an overnight journey. Passengers catch the ferry from Aberdeen, which arrives at Hatston at 23:00. It then departs Hatston, sailing on to Shetland and arriving the following morning in Lerwick at 07:30.
  • The sailing from Lerwick to Kirkwall takes place in the evening, leaving at 17:30 and arriving in Hatston at 23:00, before continuing southwards again at at 23:45, arriving in Aberdeen the following morning. Passengers travelling to Hatston must disembark the vessel upon arrival. Booking a reclining seat, sleeping pod or cabin is recommended for both journeys.   • The Aberdeen terminal is conveniently located at Jamieson’s Quay, in the heart of the city. It’s directly over the road from Union Square Shopping Centre, a five-minute walk from the bus and train stations as well as a ten-minute walk from Union Street. View transport connections to Aberdeen.
