The Orkney islands are about 53 miles long, and 23 miles wide, with over 22,000 people living across 17 inhabited islands. At the heart of Orkney, Kirkwall is dominated by the magnificent red sandstone St Magnus Cathedral. In the south west, Stromness and its picturesque harbour is the home port of NorthLink’s MV Hamnavoe.

Throughout Orkney, there is a wealth of archaeological treasures, including Neolithic standing stones and tombs, iron age brochs, Norse churches and more recent Second World War remains.

However, to truly appreciate the rich tapestry of Orkney, go beyond the mainland and seek out the individual character and charm of the outer islands. Why not visit North Ronaldsay, famous for its seaweed grazing sheep; Hoy, with its high hills; Sanday, with its impressive coastline of beaches; or Rousay, which is home to a huge collection of ancient monuments?
