John O’Groats is a small village in the far north of Scotland, known as one of the most iconic and remote destinations in the British Isles. Located in the Highland council area of Scotland, it is often associated with being the northernmost point of mainland Britain, though the true northernmost location is actually Dunnet Head, a few miles to the west. Nevertheless, John O’Groats remains a symbol of adventure and exploration, attracting visitors from around the world who seek to experience the rugged beauty of the Scottish coastline.

The village takes its name from Jan de Groot, a Dutchman who, according to legend, was granted permission by King James IV of Scotland in the late 15th century to operate a ferry between the Scottish mainland and the Orkney Islands. De Groot’s name evolved over time into “John O’Groats,” and the area became synonymous with journeys to the northernmost reaches of the UK. The village’s historical significance is rooted in its role as a key crossing point to the Orkney Islands, which were under Norwegian rule until 1472, when they became part of Scotland.
