Able Seaman / Efficient Deck Hand Vacancy

Applications are invited for the position of Able Seafarer (AB) / Efficient Deck Hand (EDH) within the Serco NorthLink Ferries fleet.

Context/Job Purpose

As an AB/EDH the candidate will work under the instruction of the BOSUN directed by the Chief Officer (Head of the Deck Department) in order to maintain the ship.  There will also be duties assigned to the candidate by the Officer of the Watch or Master.

Minimum Certification


  • STCW ’95 Basic Safety Training / Manilla Amendments
  • Valid ENG1 Medical
  • AB Certificate / EDH Certificate
  • Watch Rating Certificate
  • Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats (not including fast rescue boat)
  • Proficiency in Fast Rescue Boat
  • Fire Prevention & Fire Fighting
  • Security Awareness or Designated Security Duties


  • Crowd Control or Crisis Management & Human Behaviour
  • MarinArk Basic Descent
  • STCW Advanced Fire Fighting

Duties and Responsibilities

As per job description.

Place of Work

The AB/EDH may be required to work on any vessel owned, managed or chartered by the ship owner out of the Northern Isles locations that the operator has vessels operating.  The normal work pattern is two weeks on/off with annual leave.

It is preferred that Candidates live within the local vicinity of our Ports (Aberdeen, Orkney & Shetland).

Vacancy details:
NorthLink Ferries are currently recruiting for a Customer Service Assistant to be based at our Stromness Terminal. This is a full time post working 35 hours per week for a fixed term contract of 12 months.

Job Purpose:
To provide an excellent first point of contact with customers face to face, on the phone and via email. The NorthLink experience should reflect the business` core values of quality, service and responsibility while at the same time, encouraging conversion of initial enquiries to bookings and repeat business to existing customers.
