Deck and Engine Apprentices

Serco NorthLink Ferries is a dynamic organisation with a strong reputation in both passenger and freight transport operating between the Northern Isles and Mainland Scotland.

We are currently seeking candidates living within the catchment area of the NorthLink Ferries operating ports (Aberdeen, Scrabster, Shetland & Orkney) who are keen to begin a rewarding career at sea.

Deck Rating Apprentice

Through our Deck Rating Apprenticeship you will undertake a fully funded 2-year training programme where you will attend college at NAFC Marine Centre, Shetland and gain experience on board the NorthLink vessels.  The course will begin in August 2019.

Upon successful completion of the Apprenticeship, you will gain certification in:

  • STCW Basic Training
  • Level 2 Award in Maritime Studies (Watch Rating – deck)
  • Watch Rating Certificate STCW Reg II/4
  • Level 2 Certificate in Maritime Studies (Able Seafarer – deck)
  • PSC&RB
  • Efficient Deck Hand
  • Able Seafarer STCW Reg II/5

Engine Room Rating Apprentices

Through our Engine Room Rating Apprenticeship you will undertake a fully funded 2-year training programme where you will attend college at NAFC Marine Centre, Shetland and gain experience on board the NorthLink vessels.  The course will begin in August 2019.

Upon successful completion of the Apprenticeship, you will gain certification in:

  • STCW Basic Training
  • Watch Rating Certificate STCW Reg III/4
  • Diploma in Maritime Studies: Able Seafarer (Engine Room)
  • Able Seafarer STCW Reg III/5

In your role at sea you will carry out a variety of physical duties, within a supportive team and under the guidance of experienced Officers, to help ensure the smooth sailing of vessel operations.

We are looking for enthusiastic, reliable, determined and hardworking candidates. You will be a self-starter, team player, problem solver. The role will require you to work shift patterns and you must be able to pass a seafarers medical examination for working at sea. GCSE grades A to C or equivalent in Maths and English are essential.

Aberdeen Ferry Terminal

Vacancy details:
NorthLink Ferries are currently recruiting for a seasonal Customer Service Assistant to be based at our Aberdeen Terminal. Contract up until 31st October 2019
This post is a full time post working 35 hours per week. A salary of £17,088 is available.

Job Purpose:
To provide an excellent first point of contact with customers face to face, on the phone and via email. The NorthLink experience should reflect the business` core values of quality, service and responsibility while at the same time, encouraging conversion of initial enquiries to bookings and repeat business to existing customers.

Main duties:

  • Meeting and greeting passengers from arriving ferries whilst portraying excellent customer service.
  • Receiving, checking in and boarding departing passengers whilst portraying excellent customer service.
  • Handling customer calls, providing information on NorthLink Ferries and associated services providing background information as required on the Northern Isles, converting call enquiries to reservations and entering reservations via the NorthLink Ferries booking system.
  • Responding professionally and efficiently to e-mail and web based enquiries maximising the conversion of enquiries to reservations.
  • Collating, entering and maintaining customer and supplier data.
  • Handling payments particularly by way of Credit/Debit Card.
  • Administrative duties in support of the reservations functions e.g. preparation, communication and storage of correspondence with customers.
  • All other duties in keeping with the role of the Customer Service operation.
  • Embrace the business’s Health and Safety culture and take reasonable care of your own and other people’s health and safety. Contribute to Health and Safety in the work place whilst adhering to Serco Management System requirements.
  • Adhere to the ISPS code to a level suitable to your position as stipulated by your line manager. Undertake security in line the Serco Management System, with reference to Information Security.

What we are looking for in our candidate:

  • Educated to Scottish Higher grade standard or equivalent
  • Well developed communication skills
  • Ability to deliver first class customer service.
  • Good IT and administration skills
  • At least 1 year in a customer service role
