Chocolate Kracknel recipe
Over the years, we have kindly been given many family recipes from NorthLink Ferries’ staff to share with our readers. This Chocolate Kracknel recipe comes from our Marketing Officer, Amy Leith, who is based in our Aberdeen office.
To add a little more indulgence, my grandma has always melted some chocolate to pour over the top of the Kracknel. You can get as creative as you like with this and use whichever kind of chocolate is your favourite!
The recipe was shared from her grandma who has made a few tweaks of her own to the original recipe, which is from the Friends of Insch Hospital and Community Cook Book. She likes to add crushed digestive biscuits and finishes the traybake off with a chocolate topping – making a much-loved treat even more delicious!
This simple, no-bake recipe is perfect for when you need something sweet without too much fuss!

Ingredients
- 7 oz (200g) golden syrup
- 7 oz (200g) margarine
- 7 oz (200g) dried milk
- 1¾ oz (50g) drinking chocolate
- 5 oz (140g) cornflakes (crushed)
- 6 digestive biscuits (crushed)
- 180g chocolate

Method
1. Melt the golden syrup and margarine together in a large bowl. We did this on the hob over a pot of simmering water.
2. Once fully melted, add in the dried milk and the drinking chocolate. Stir until fully combined to be left with a thick chocolatey mixture.

3. Add in your crushed cornflakes and digestives and stir until combined.

4. Transfer the mixture into a lined baking tin (the one we used was 9×9 inches) and press it down into a smooth layer.
5. Place in the fridge to set for at least 20 minutes.

6. To add a little more indulgence, my grandma has always melted some chocolate to pour over the top of the Kracknel. You can get as creative as you like with this and use whichever kind of chocolate is your favourite! My grandma always uses either Cadbury’s Crunchie Bits Bar or a Daim Bar to add a wee bit of crunch – and it’s delicious.
7. Place in the fridge again until the chocolate has set.
8. Slice into small pieces and enjoy with a cup of tea or coffee and friends.
Top tip: Chocolate Kracknel freezes very well, making it the perfect treat to have on hand when family or friends come round to visit!
