A distinctly different experience awaits you at the most northerly extreme of Britain – the Shetland islands. After arriving in Lerwick, Shetland’s vibrant capital, no matter what direction you head, you’ll find rich history and heritage, and there is magnificent scenery and abundant wildlife just waiting to be discovered in this largely unspoilt clean and pure environment.
Arguable the best place in Europe to view seabirds, Shetland is also home to otters and orca, and no visit would be complete without a sighting of the world-famous Shetland Pony. Visitors in May will be lucky enough to see their tiny foals at play.
As for the outer islands, each has its own unique traits and special attractions – all are crying out for a visit. Why not explore the rugged coastline of Out Skerries; visit Unst, the most northern island; discover the large seabird colonies of Foula, or learn traditional Fair Isle knitting in Fair Isle itself?
