Applications are invited for the position of Able Seafarer (AB) within the Serco NorthLink Ferries fleet.

Context/Job Purpose
As an AB the candidate will work under the instruction of the BOSUN directed by the Chief Officer (Head of the Deck Department) in order to maintain the ship. There will also be duties assigned to the candidate relating to mooring and cargo operations directed by the Officer of the Watch or Master.

Minimum Certification

Essential

  • STCW ’95 Basic Safety Training / Manilla Amendments
  • Valid ENG1 Medical
  • AB Certificate
  • EDH Certificate
  • Watch Rating Certificate
  • Personal Survival Techniques
  • Personal Safety and Social Responsibility
  • Elementary First Aid
  • Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats (not including fast rescue boat)
  • Proficiency in Fast Rescue Boat
  • Fire Prevention & Fire Fighting
  • Security Awareness or Designated Security Duties
  • Crowd Management

Desirable

  • Crisis Management & Human Behaviour
  • MarinArk Basic Descent

Duties and Responsibilities

Place of Work
The AB may be required to work on any vessel owned, managed or chartered by the ship owner out of the Northern Isles locations that the operator has vessels operating. The normal work pattern is two weeks on/off with annual leave.

It is preferred that Candidates live within the local vicinity of our Ports (Aberdeen, Orkney & Shetland).

About the role
The successful candidate will provide an excellent first point of contact with customers either via telephone, face to face or electronic methods, within one of Transport’s flagship contracts. They will assist the public with travel booking and advice, delivering an exceptional customer service experience, while at the same time encouraging conversion of enquiries to bookings.

Key accountabilities:

  • Deal with all aspects of customer enquiries and bookings with regard to our passenger, freight and livestock services and sponsorship programme
  • Maximise the conversion of enquiries to reservations
  • Accurate data inputting via the NorthLink booking system
  • Collating, entering and maintaining customer and supplier data, whilst complying with GDPR and Data Protection Act
  • Handling payments particularly by way of Credit/Debit Card
  • Administrative duties in support of the reservations functions e.g. preparation, communication and storage of correspondence with customers
  • Embrace and adhere to the business’s Health, Safety and Environment Serco Policy
  • Any other duties required by the Manager or Company

About you

  • Educated to Scottish Higher grade standard or equivalent
  • Some demonstrable customer service experience
  • The job requires an understanding of the systems and procedures in Customer Service
